Whether you call Vernon home all year round or if you vacation there in the summer months there are several fun things do to that can keep you busy every single day if you like. Situated in the sunny, picturesque Okanagan Valley, Vernon is a growing community because of all the great things it has to offer. From hot summer days to snowy nights and an abundance of lakes there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Situated throughout the Okanagan Valley you will find world-renowned wineries, awards winning restaurants and a large number of pristine waterways, orchards, hiking trails and beaches. Pick a direction and head off. There are many great adventures less than an hour’s drive away. It is easy to understand why people are contacting local realtors and making a permanent move to Vernon. Here are a few reasons.

  • Kalamalka and Okanagan Lake

Vernon has not one but two beautiful lakes so if you are hoping to spend the day at the beach you are in luck. Kal beach, as the locals call it, comes complete with paddleboard rentals, a snack concession stand as well as a nice long sandy beach on which to place your towel. Bring the kids and enjoy the day. Okanagan Lake is also a great option. If you can, take in both beaches on different days to find your favourite.

  • Silver Star Mountain

Though well known as a ski holiday destination there is more to this mountain resort than meets the eye. Open for both the winter and summer seasons it is a great place to spend a day whether it be hot and sunny or cold and snowing. It has a large number of popular restaurants and pubs as well as fun outdoor pursuits such as hiking, biking and guided nature tours as well as skiing or snowshoeing in the cooler months.

  • Kettle Valley Rail Trail

As the longest-running rail-trail network in beautiful and picturesque British Columbia it would be easy to spend more than one day taking in this Okanagan Valley experience. If you like to be active while enjoying breathtaking scenery and views you won’t be disappointed by this day trip.   • Mable or Sugar Lake

Though they may not be as well known as the more southern lakes, both Mable and Sugar Lake situated outside the quaint Village of Lumby are worth a visit. Mable Lake is fed by the pristine Shuswap River and its cool waters will refresh you on a hot summer day. If you enjoy fishing definitely check out this lake. Sugar Lake has an undisturbed natural habitat perfect for fishing, canoeing, swimming and hiking. 

  • Wineries

While choosing my favourite winery may be tempting there are so many to enjoy that picking just one does not seem fair. Instead consider going on several small trips to tour each of the establishments so you can find one that speaks to you. Spend a day touring and be sure to make a reservation at one of the many restaurants offered. Whether you want a more fine or casual experience is up to you.

  • Atlantis Waterslides

If you have kids or just enjoy a fun day at the waterslides Atlantis waterpark is worth a visit. Although it may not be as large as some in the more populated regions the park does offer ten slides including the ever-popular river ride. Watch your kids run up and down the hill as you enjoy some time in the pools and extra-large hot tub. Bring your own lunch or snack on food from the concession stand. 

  • Davison Orchard

The family-run and owned Davison Orchards is a popular destination for both locals and visitors to the Okanagan Valley. With a large selection of homemade fares such as pies, preserves and other baked goods as well as opportunities to tour the farm and orchards, meet the animals or watch the kids play in the number of parks offered on the property. 

  • Provincial Parks

If you want to spend a day or two taking in the great outdoors you are in luck. The Vernon area has many Provincial Parks such as Ellison, Kekuli Bay and Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park. Spend your day on the trails taking in the scenery and the views and do not forget to bring your swim gear so you can cool off in the lake water that awaits.
